What this engine is

  • Yamaha F150 / LF150 is a 150-hp, 4-stroke outboard
  • Designed for reliability, fuel efficiency, and long life
  • Uses electronic fuel injection (EFI) and computer engine management (ECM)

The MOST Important Safety Rules (read these once)

  • Always wear a life jacket
  • Attach the kill switch lanyard to yourself every time
  • Keep people away from the prop, even in neutral
  • Never touch hot or moving engine parts
  • Stop the engine if anyone is in the water near the boat

If you remember only one thing:
πŸ‘‰ Kill switch + prop awareness prevent most serious accidents.

Fuel & Oil (very important)

Fuel

  • Use unleaded gasoline only
  • E10 (up to 10% ethanol) is OK
  • Never use E15 or E85 – it WILL damage the engine
  • Fresh fuel only; water or old fuel causes most engine issues

Engine Oil

  • Use Yamalube 4M FC-W or equivalent marine oil
  • Common choice: 10W-30
  • Oil capacity:
    • ~4.3 L (4.5 qt) without filter change
    • ~4.5 L (4.8 qt) with filter change

Before You Start the Engine (quick checklist)

  1. Fuel line connected & primed
  2. Engine oil level OK
  3. Cooling water intake clear
  4. Kill switch attached
  5. Gear in neutral

Starting & Operating the Engine

Starting

  • Keep throttle at idle
  • Turn key to start
  • Let engine warm up a few minutes

While Running

  • Watch for warning lights or alarms
  • Confirm water is flowing from the tell-tale (pee hole)
  • Use trim to optimize ride, speed, and fuel economy

Trimming Tips

  • Too much trim = porpoising / prop blowout
  • Too little trim = sluggish and poor fuel economy
  • Small adjustments make a big difference

Warning Alarms (don’t ignore these)

If you hear a buzzer or see an alert:

  • Overheat β†’ Reduce throttle immediately, check water flow
  • Low oil pressure β†’ Shut down ASAP
  • Water in fuel β†’ Drain separator before continuing

The engine will protect itself, but continuing to run can cause damage

After Every Trip (especially saltwater)

  • Flush the engine with fresh water
  • Rinse exterior
  • Check for fuel or oil leaks

Flushing is one of the best things you can do for engine life

Maintenance – What Actually Matters

Basic Schedule (simplified)

  • Every trip: visual check, rinse
  • 20 hours / 3 months: general inspection
  • 100 hours / 1 year:
    • Engine oil + filter
    • Gear oil
    • Inspect spark plugs
    • Grease fittings
  • Impeller: inspect regularly, replace as needed (often every 2–3 years)

Follow the maintenance chart if you want maximum lifespan (these motors routinely hit 3,000+ hours when maintained)

Trailering & Storage

Trailering

  • Transport engine down when possible
  • If tilted, use a transom saver
  • Turn off fuel valve

Long-Term Storage (2+ months)

  • Stabilize or remove fuel
  • Fog the engine
  • Store upright
  • Keep dry and ventilated Yamaha-F150-LF150-LIT-18626-14-…

Emergency Situations

  • Overheat / alarm β†’ Slow down, shut off if needed
  • Dead battery β†’ Engine can be manually tilted
  • Water in fuel β†’ Drain separator before continuing
  • Submerged engine β†’ Do NOT restart; dealer service required

What Yamaha REALLY Wants You to Do

  • Use clean fuel
  • Change oil regularly
  • Flush after saltwater use
  • Fix small issues early
  • Use genuine filters and oil when possible

Do those things and this engine is famously reliable.
