Boats built after 1972 have a Hull Identification Number (HIN)—a unique 12- or 17-digit serial number that works like a boat’s VIN. You’ll usually find it on the upper right side of the transom. This number tells you who made the boat, its serial number, and when it was built. It’s important for registration, identifying the boat, and even helping authorities recover it if it’s ever stolen.
Legally, you cannot:
- Change the HIN to make the boat appear to be a different vessel
- Paint over it
- Cover it up
- Damage, deface, or remove it in any way
This HIN is similar to a car or truck vehicle’s VIN.
